How it is calculated
A tablecloth's size is the table size plus twice the drop, because the cloth hangs on both sides: 10 in of drop suits everyday meals, 15 in looks formal, and about 30 in reaches the floor on a standard height table. The tool compares that number to the common retail sizes (52 x 70, 60 x 84, 60 x 102 and 60 x 120 for rectangles; 70, 90, 108, 120 and 132 in rounds) and names the smallest that covers it.
To sew one, 1 in hems are added all round. If the cloth is wider than the fabric, it is made from two lengths: the full width panel runs down the middle and the second length is split into two side panels, so no seam runs down the center of the table.
Worked example
A 72 x 40 in dining table with a casual 10 in drop needs a 92 x 60 in cloth. The closest standard size is 60 x 102 in, which just hangs a little deeper at the ends. To sew it from 54 in home decor fabric, two 94 in lengths are joined: buy 5 1/4 yd (about 4.8 m).

- What size tablecloth fits a 6 foot rectangular table?
- A 72 x 30 in banquet table with a 15 in drop needs 102 x 60, so the standard 60 x 102 in cloth is made for exactly this. For a floor length drop on the same table, choose 60 x 132 or have one made.
- What size tablecloth for a 48 inch round table?
- With a casual 10 in drop you need 68 in, so a 70 in round cloth. A 90 in round gives a dressier 21 in drop, and 108 in reaches the floor.
- How much drop should a tablecloth have?
- 6 to 12 in for everyday use, around 15 in for formal settings, and about 30 in to touch the floor on a 30 in high table. Anything shorter than 6 in tends to look skimpy.
- Can I sew a tablecloth without a seam?
- Yes, if the cloth width fits the fabric: 108 in wide quilt backing fabric makes seamless cloths for almost any table. Otherwise join two lengths with the full panel centered, never a seam down the middle.
